    Русское хозяин указывает на главенствующее положение кого-либо, но не указывает по отношению к кому или чему человек является хозяином. В английских эквивалентах именно эта конкретизация чрезвычайно существенна.
    1. landlord , landlady — хозяин, хозяйка, владелец жилья, гостиницы, дома или квартиры, владелица жилья, гостиницы, дома или квартиры (по отношению к жильцам, квартиросъемщику): The landlady asked the tenant to pay a two months advance in rent. — Хозяйка попросила квартиранта заплатить за два месяца вперед. The landlady refused to serve a drunk client. — Хозяйка гостиницы/паба отказалась обслуживать пьяного клиента.
    2. host , hostess — хозяин, хозяйка ( по отношению к гостям): The host and the hostess saw the guests to the door. — Хозяева проводили гостей до дверей. Не is a generous host and entertains a lot. — Он щедрый хозяин, у него часто бывают гости. Не asked his sister to act hostess. — Он попросил сестру быть за хозяйку.
    3. master , mistress — хозяин, хозяйка (по отношению к слугам, прислуге, животным, а также по отношению к другим домочадцам более низкого социального положения): When the master was out the servants idled the time away. — В отсутствие хозяина слуги бездельничали. The cook was irrationally afraid of the mistress. — Кухарка без всяких на то причин боялась хозяйки. «Who is the master of the house?", shouted the husband exasperated at the endless argument with his wife. — «Кто в доме хозяин?» — закричал муж, доведенный до исступления бесконечным спором с женой.     5. housewife — хозяйка, домашняя хозяйка ( неработающая женщина): She is a bad housewife. — Она плохая хозяйка./Она не умеет вести хозяйство.
    6. employer — хозяин, работодатель ( по отношению к служащим и рабочим предприятия): The employer refused to consider the demands of the Trade Union. — Хозяин отказался рассматривать требования профсоюза. The employees and the employer came to a consensus on the issue of additional payment. — Служащие и работодатель пришли к соглашению/ консенсусу по вопросу о дополнительной оплате. The employer is looking for a good manager. — Хозяин ищет хорошего менеджера.
    7. boss — хозяин, начальник (разговорная форма, часто используется как обращение): The boss is angry, don't talk back/object to him too much. — Хозяин зол, не перечь ему слишком. Hi, boss, glad you are back. — Привет, босс, хорошо, что вы вернулись.
